The Diocese of Banks and Torres consist of the northernmost islands of Vanuatu. Until its inauguration in 1996 it was part of the Diocese of Vanuatu. The headquarters of the diocese was established at Sola which was also the political administrative centre of the Torba province.

It was in Banks and Torres that the Melanesian mission headquarters was first established and used as a springboard for evangelization in both Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands.

It comprised of the Islands of Mere lava, Gaua, Vanualava, Mota, Motalava, and the most northern islands of the archipelago Rah, Ureparapara Toga, Loh, Tegua, Hiu and Metoma.

The diocese is made up of three Regions - Gaua/Mere lava Region with four districts, Central Region with six and Torres Region with three.

The first Bishop was Bishop Charles Ling of Mota Lava in the Diocese of Banks and Torres who set the foundation for the diocese in terms of evangelization, education and self support programmes.

Bishop Nathan Tome from Solomon Islands succeeded Charles Ling in 2000 to become the second Bishop and continued with the work of the diocese.
